Paspalum dilatatum
Paspalum dilatatum -
A grass introduced from South America. It grows from 1 to 3m tall. When flowering, it exudes a sticky substance. As kids playing in long paspalum grass, we often come home with our limbs almost black with dirt and paspalum sap. My childhood friend Darryll Wormald informs me that the black substance in the paspalum sap is ergot, a fungal disease poisonous to humans.
