Skipper Ant

Myrmecia nigrocincta: These are aggressive little buggers about 15mm long. They will look up at you, decide if you are a threat, then attack fearlessly one-on-one. Unlike other ants, they have a sting in their tail like a bee and boy do they hurt, at least as much as a bee sting if not more. They attack with a skipping/jumping action which makes them difficult to follow in the leaf litter. Often while you are watching the one skipping towards you, you will be bitten by the one you didn't see behind you.
