Bob Trlin > Caleana major (closed)
This orchid has a trigger mechanism that temporarily captures insects to aid pollination. R D Fitzgerald describes the action as "pseudo-copulation with male sawflies" and wonders what the attraction mechanism might be. I wouldn't have thought that was obvious. The following photo shows the orchid in the open or cocked position resembling a flying duck thus its common name "Large Duck Orchid". Despite being only15mm long, there is a smaller species.
Bob Trlin > Caleana major (open)
Guess why they call it the Duck Orchid? See the previous photo showing it in the closed position.
Bob Trlin > Calochilus ?
Bob Trlin > Calochilus campestris
Bob Trlin > Calochilus paludosus
Bob Trlin > Cryptostylis erecta
Like the Caleanas, the Cryptostylis also fertilises through pseudo-copulation but these use a male Lissopimpla wasp otherwise known as the Orchid Dupe Wasp. It seems the orchid mimicks the scent of the female Lissopimpla. For the male wasps sake, I hope he enjoys it.
Bob Trlin > Crystostylis subulata
Bob Trlin > Cymbidium suave
These are epiphytes favouring old Sydney Pepermints (Eucalyptus piperita). Note the little spider camera hog - it comes free..
